Complete and Partial Dentures

When it comes to dentures, many people expect they will need them eventually. Proper care of your teeth can help your teeth last throughout your lifetime, but if you should find the majority of your teeth missing, dentures can help renew your smile, improving both the look and functionality. People may lose their teeth for a number of reasons: accident, illness, medication, or aging. If you feel your smile would benefit from dentures, we can help.

We can provide complete dentures to replace all teeth or a partial denture to replace one or more missing teeth. A partial can be made of acrylic or a cast partial with metal structure and clasps to create the optimal customized fit. Both complete and partial dentures are made from an impression of the wearer’s mouth. Once the mold is made and the measurements are sent off to a dental lab to be made into permanent dentures.

Dr. Paul DeMan also provides implant retained dentures and fixed bridges.

How Dentures Benefit Dental Patients

Even if you are missing only a few of your natural teeth, finding a way to fill in those gaps is important to maintaining a healthy, functioning smile. When teeth are missing, the remaining natural teeth can shift and move out of alignment. These natural teeth are also more susceptible to wear. Shifted or worn down teeth can throw of your bite, making not only the missing teeth the reason it’s harder to chew. Dentures allow you to eat more of what you want with fewer restrictions. Additionally, dentures give your face a fuller appearance because a significant amount of missing teeth can cause your cheeks to look sunken or sagging.

4 Types of Dentures at Our Napanee Clinic – Find the One Right for You

There are 4 different types of dentures available from Dr. Paul DeMan Dentistry. These include:

  • Partial dentures – When you are only missing one or more teeth, partial dentures may be the solution. These dentures include only one or a few false teeth and clamp into place near your healthy teeth. A partial denture can be taken out to clean.
  • Complete (full) dentures – For those who have lost all their teeth, complete or full dentures replace all of your natural teeth.
  • Fixed bridge – Similar to a partial denture, a fixed bridge consists of one or more false teeth that are held in place between your healthy teeth. Unlike other dentures, a fixed bridge cannot be removed.
  • Dental implants – A dental implant adds needed support to dentures and fixed bridges. We insert a small metal post into your jawbone. This post is topped with a prosthetic tooth and anchors dentures and bridges in place.

Taking Care of Your Dentures – What You Need to Know

Just like with natural teeth, you need to take care of your dentures every day. Here are some tips to remember:

  • Make sure to clean your dentures over a sink filled with water just in case you drop them. Dropping them into an empty sink may cause them to crack or break.
  • Remove your dentures every night; clean your gums and any remaining teeth. Be sure to use a soft toothbrush.
  • Soak your dentures overnight. Dentures can shrink if left out to dry which can cause them not to fit. You can soak your dentures in special cleaner, warm water, or a mixture of half water and half vinegar. Should your dentures have metal clasps, only use warm water.
  • Brush your dentures. If you’ve soaked them first, this will help loosen up any tartar or plaque. Use a soft tooth brush.
